We test drove the Hyundai Sonata. The model we drove was equipped with a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder Turbo engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Sonata is only available in front-wheel drive. Our test model had 180hp @ 5,500rpm and generated torque of 195lb-ft @ 1,500-4,500rpm.
Hyundai Sonata Highway Fuel Economy
We drove the Hyundai Sonata for approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in order to test its highway fuel economy. In our highway fuel economy test, the Sonata achieved 4.7 liters per 100km or 50mpg. This means on every liter of fuel, you can get 21.2 kilometers of highway driving.
In this section, we take our total mileage done throughout our test, and calculate it against our fuel fill up quantity and cost. At the end of the test, we had driven a total of 361km (224 miles). We still had two-thirds of our fuel tank left. We did 60% of our driving in the city and 40% on the highway.
We spent $25.41 (CAD) to fill up 26.3 liters of fuel at a fuel cost of $0.0965/liter. If we were to fill up in Detroit, we would spend $12.49 (USD) to fill up 6.94 gallons of fuel at $1.80/gallon. The Sonata has a fuel tank capacity of 60 liters or 15.9 gallons.
Distance Per Liter/Gallon
Kilometers Per Liter: The Sonata achieved 13.7km/L, meaning every liter of fuel gives 13.7 kilometers of driving.
Miles Per Gallon: The Sonata achieved 32MPG, which means every gallon of fuel gives32 miles of driving.
Liters Per 100 kilometers: The Sonata achieves 7.3L/100km, which means it takes 7.3 liters to drive 100 kilometers.
Actual Fuel Range
Actual Fuel Range is calculated by taking the aforementioned Distance Per Liter (13.7km/L) and multiplying it by the fuel tank capacity (60 liters). On a full tank of fuel, based on our driving, you can expect 822km or 510 miles of driving.
Cost Per Kilometer
To calculate the Cost Per Kilometer, we will divide the total fuel cost against the total distance driven. Our calculations show that every kilometer in the Sonata costs $0.07 (CAD) in Toronto and$0.05 (USD)in Detroit.
Cost of a Full Tank
To calculate the Cost of a Full Tank, we will multiply the local fuel price against the fuel tank capacity. Our calculations show it costs $57.90 (CAD) to fill up in Toronto, and $28.82 (USD) to fill up in Detroit, USA.
