2027 KIA EV4 – Battery Economy Review (KM/KWH, Range & Charging Costs)

Today we're test driving the all-new KIA EV4 and we're going to do a battery economy test to see how well it performs. As you can see right now, we have a full battery charge, and on this full charge our battery range is estimated to be 484 km or 301 miles before we run completely out of charge. You'll also notice that I've just reset my trip meter and it reads zero. We're going to be driving this over the week and see how many kilometers we complete, and after that we'll head to the charging station to see how much it costs to charge up, so stay tuned.
KIA EV4 Battery Economy Test Results

We just spent the week driving the EV4, and we have some numbers here we'd like to share with you. As you can see, we drove a total of 564 km and have a remaining battery range of 12 km.
I should also mention that the battery capacity of the KIA EV4 is 81.4 kilowatt hours. My driving conditions have been pretty basic. I haven't had the air conditioning or the heating on, but have had the sound system on the whole time. Also worth noting is we spent about 50% of our driving in the city and 50% on the highway - just to give you an idea of how we got the numbers that we did. The cost of electricity in my city is $0.12 per kWh.
Actual Battery Range
To get our total real-world battery range, we'll take the 564 km of driving that we did and add a potential 12 km of battery range. So 564 km, plus 12 km, gives us a total of 576 km or 358 miles. That means our actual real-world driving range on a full charge, based on my driving, is 576 km or 358 miles.
Cost of a Full Charge
Now, let's calculate our cost of a full charge. We'll do that by taking the 81.4 kilowatt hours of battery capacity and multiplying that by our local hydro rate of 12 cents per kilowatt hour. So 81.4 kilowatt hours, multiplied by 12 cents per kilowatt hour, gives us 9 dollars and 77 cents. That means a full charge in the EV4 would cost us 9 dollars and 77 cents.
Distance Per Kilowatt Hour
Now, let's calculate our distance per kilowatt hour. We'll do that by taking the 576 km of driving range and dividing it by 81.4 kilowatt hours. So 576 km, divided by 81.4 kilowatt hours, gives us 7.1 km per kilowatt hour. That means every kilowatt hour of battery gives us 7.1 km or 4.4 miles of driving.
Cost Per Kilometer
Now, let's calculate our cost per kilometer. We'll do that by taking our cost of a full charge, which is 9 dollars and 77 cents, and dividing it by the 576 km of driving range. So 9 dollars and 77 cents, divided by 576 km, gives us 1.7 cents per kilometer. That means every kilometer in the EV4 costs us 1.7 cents.
Cost Per Mile
Now, let's calculate our cost per mile. We'll do that by taking our cost of a full charge, which is 9 dollars and 77 cents, and dividing it by the 358 miles of driving range. So 9 dollars and 77 cents, divided by 358 miles, gives us 2.7 cents per mile. That means every mile in the EV4 costs us 2.7 cents.
